Wake Forest CB DaShawn Jones is transferred to Alabama Football.
Wednesday saw the official announcement of DaShawn Jones’ much-anticipated transfer to Alabama; the Tide have now acquired the seasoned cornerback they have been after all spring.
After making a big impact for the Demon Deacons in 2023, Jones will transfer from the ACC to the SEC. He’ll try to support a cornerback room in Tuscaloosa that is full of talented rookies but woefully short on playing experience.
Transfer to USC The other cornerback position is up for grabs, but Domani Jackson appears to be the leader of the group. Zabien Brown, a true freshman, and Jones will be in competition for the position. No matter how the depth chart is arranged, Alabama’s cornerbacks will start the season relatively inexperienced and without a single SEC snap. There are a few difficult games in the early part of the season, so the team will need to mature quickly.
Theoretically, the Crimson Tide can rely on a strong front seven to shield the secondary until it can get going. It will greatly ease things on the back end and facilitate the group’s chemistry if it can field a strong pass rush.
Tony Mitchell and Peyton Woodyard, two youthful safeties, were lost to the transfer portal by Alabama this spring. In response, it added Jones at cornerback and Kameron Howard, a former Charlotte safety.
Long-term monitoring of this tradeoff will be intriguing because, at least when it comes to recruitment rankings, Woodyard and Mitchell appear to be the more talented pair. Nevertheless, Jones and Howard have a great deal more combined experience and were both starters in college. Alabama will gain from the trade for the upcoming 2024 season just for this reason.
DaShawn Jones is one of the older players the Tide added to the secondary, which was much needed, especially at cornerback.
