The Saints miss out on acquiring a second wide receiver.
Another wide receiver move for the NFL came together on Tuesday morning. The Buffalo Bills signed veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdez-Scantling this time. This offseason, MVS piqued the curiosity of the New Orleans Saints.
Did the Saints pass up the wide receiver?
MVS decided to play with the Bills offense and Josh Allen. He is not to fault for that.
You also have to wonder just how aggressively MVS was pursued from New Orleans.
A.T. Perry impressed them with what they witnessed last year. Not to add, they had their eye on Bub Means as a potential from the beginning of the draft. He was selected by the Saints on the third round, and they anticipate him to be an additional big-body option for their passing attack. He also made an impression on them last weekend at rookie minicamp.
The risk they incurred in signing him will never be known, but New Orleans would be better off using the money elsewhere. Safety depth and maybe interior defensive line depth are still issues for the team to solve. One veteran asset would be nice for both of those defensive situations. In any case, MVS is going to the AFC. Prior to the draft, the Saints added a number of experienced wide receivers via free agency.
They’ll all be fighting for slots on the roster. Cedrick Wilson Jr. is your best bet to start the season on the team for those men, if I had to make a prediction right now. Equanimeous St. Brown and Stanley Morgan Jr. will also need to put in a lot of work at camp to win their spots.
This season, the Saints will likely have higher expectations for Perry and Means than some fans do. See if the young guys can pass them off as intelligent.
