Oscar Pinto Sansano joins the men’s tennis program at Georgia.
ATHENS, Georgia — Oscar Pinto Sansano, a transfer, has joined the University of Georgia men’s tennis team, as new head coach Jamie Hunt revealed on Wednesday afternoon.
Originally from Castellón de la Plana, Spain, Pinto Sansano’s current Universal Tennis Rating is 13.15. He attended Arkansas for his freshman year before moving to Virginia Commonwealth University for the most recent season. He is currently a rising junior. He was a major asset to the Rams, helping the Atlantic 10 Champions win seven doubles matches on court one and compile a 14-3 singles record on courts two and three.
Coach Hunt exclaimed, “I am so happy to welcome Oscar to our program.” He is an outstanding player with a great deal of experience in both doubles and singles. In addition to his skill on the court, he is a great asset to the program because of his excellent moral character.”
Pinto Sansano assisted in guiding VCU to its seventh consecutive Atlantic 10 tournament title. The Rams finished with a 16–10 record to qualify for the 2024 NCAA Tournament, where Pinto Sansano helped them defeat Princeton in the opening round. During the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend, the team also defeated No. 12 Mississippi State in Starkville, with Pinto Sanso recording significant victories in both doubles and singles.
On March 5, Pinto Sansano achieved a career high in the ITA Doubles Rankings, peaking at No. 31 alongside German Samofalov. Additionally, on March 7 and 14, he was named A-10 Performer of the Week twice. Pinto Sansano, who spent most of the dual match season on court one, finished his career at VCU with records of 15-3 in singles and 13-11 in doubles.
He peaked at No. 275 in the International Tennis Federation Juniors World Ranking prior to beginning his college career. He was ranked No. 53 in the UTR World Rankings. Pinto Sansano, who reached his highest position of No. 80 in the Spanish national rankings, defeated professional player Vilius Gaubas to win the ‘J5’ 2019 La Nucia Tournament in Spain. In 2020, he also reached three straight quarterfinals and appeared in the J2 Benicarlo Tournament semifinals the same year.
Aidan Atwood, a rookie signed to a contract, and Pinto Sansano round out the lineup for the 2017 campaign. The two will be joining the ten Bulldogs from the 2024 spring season that are returning.
