Michigan State has done an excellent job of fulfilling its goal of improving their cornerback positional talent for the upcoming season, which was one of their main goals going into the spring transfer portal session. Former Arizona State cornerback Ed Woods, whom the Sun Devils were hoping to lock into a starting position, committed to Michigan State almost two weeks ago, thanks to the efforts of cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin. Lejond Cavazos, a former cornerback for North Carolina, joined Martin on Monday.
Not content with his recent total transformation of the cornerback room, Martin today revealed that former LSU CB Jeremiah Hughes was headed to Michigan State to join the group.
Hughes, who is 6 feet 193 pounds, played in all 13 games for the Tigers as a true freshman at LSU in the previous season. He finished the season with six tackles while playing 181 special teams snaps and 24 defensive snaps at cornerback. He played on the kick return unit, punt return unit, and kickoff return unit as a starter for special teams. He is now aiming to advance at Michigan State, where he wants to establish himself as a mainstay in the secondary and rank among the nation’s best cornerbacks.
In just a few weeks, Martin and Blue Adams have drastically changed the defensive back room. Earlier today, they also added Nikai Martinez, a former UCF safety. Martinez is a flexible player who can play safety or cornerback, but Blue Adams will use him at safety.
Michigan State now has a lead over Indiana. Thus far in the spring transfer portal window, these players have been added: Anthony Jones, running back Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams from UMass; cornerback Ed Woods from Arizona State; Andrew Dennis, a true freshman offensive tackle from Illinois; former Cincinnati edge Tyler Gillison; former Nebraska defensive tackle Ru’Quan Buckley; and former Miami linebacker Marcellius Pullium.
