Browns Waive QB Jacob Sirmon and Sign K Lucas Havrisik
The Cleveland Browns waived fifth quarterback Jacob Sirmon at the same time they announced the acquisition of kicker Lucas Havrisik.
The Cleveland Browns waived quarterback Jacob Sirmon on Monday and announced that they have reconnected with kicker Lucas Havrisik. The most recent organized team activity (OTA) stage has been announced by the team. The squad downsizes its quarterback group to four players while keeping three place kickers on the field.
The team’s returning kicker, Dustin Hopkins, just finished the best season of his career. It’s possible that Hopkins would have eclipsed Jim Brown’s season point total if he hadn’t hurt his hamstring while defending a kick return against the Houston Texans. He did establish a career best with eight field goals of at least 50 yards. Throughout the season, he made 33 of 36 shots from that range and did not miss.
Cade York, a former fourth-round pick who joined with the organization earlier in the summer, is also a member of the squad. It appears like York and Havrisik are vying for the position of backup kicker. In theory, the Browns could trade a kicker for a player or a draft pick close to the conclusion of the preseason. Alternatively, they can attempt to add one of them to the team’s practice squad. York and Havrisik both have powerful legs and want to become more accurate field goal scorers. Hopkins’s contract is coming to an end this year. The Browns may decide to re-sign Hopkins, who is 33 years old, but if he plays out another season like he did in 2023, they may be bracing themselves for the prospect that they would not be able to match the offer Hopkins would receive from other teams.
The Browns signed Sirmon following the team’s rookie minicamp. It could have made sense to have a third quarterback to take reps and toss passes to the receivers taking part in organized team activities as Deshaun Watson and Dorian Thompson-Robinson recovered from injuries that ended their seasons. Tyler Huntley and Jameis Winston are still with the team. Given the conditions, they could be OK with just those two players, as they would receive enough of reps.
This probably had something to do with Huntley’s initial motivation for signing with the Browns. With no guaranteed salary in his contract, he appears to be the fourth quarterback on the depth chart, barring an injury. Huntley is attempting to get better as a quarterback for the other thirty-one clubs in addition to battling for a position in Cleveland.
Sirmon’s release at least begs the question of Watson and DTR’s preparedness. If only partially, one of them might be on the verge of being able to take part in OTAs. That would be good news because the Browns have been cautious with all of their ailments since the previous season.
The Browns are utilizing the fact that the triangle is the strongest shape in nature to their place-kicking circumstance in an attempt to design the finest result.
