**Alabama Secures Three Key Players from NCAA Transfer Portal**
Many critics and passionate Alabama fans believed the Crimson Tide had lost their edge in the NCAA Transfer Portal. However, first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer proved them wrong by securing three impactful commitments between May 16th and May 18th. These new additions are not only capable of playing but are expected to be legitimate starters, filling crucial gaps for Alabama’s upcoming 2024 season.
**Defensive Boost with Two Additions**
Although Alabama already secured a top cornerback in Domani Jackson via the Transfer Portal, they didn’t stop there. DaShawn Jones, a two-year starter from Wake Forest, has also joined the team. Known for his physical play, Jones excels in reading quarterbacks and wide receivers’ routes despite not being the fastest or most explosive. Last season, he recorded 37 total tackles, three interceptions (sixth-highest in the ACC), two tackles for loss, and two pass deflections.
**A Promising Safety from the Big Ten**
King Mack, a transfer from Penn State, brings tremendous potential despite limited experience. Playing primarily on special teams during his freshman year, Mack compensates for his size with outstanding athleticism and playmaking skills. His speed, instincts, ball skills, and physicality have drawn comparisons to Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker. While Mack is not yet ready for significant reps, he is expected to develop into a special player under defensive coordinator Kane Womack’s guidance.
**Strengthening the Offensive Line**
Addressing the biggest concern from the previous season, Alabama has reinforced its offensive line by adding rising redshirt junior guard Geno VanDeMark. Over the past two seasons with Michigan State, VanDeMark played in 18 games, starting eight. Despite injuries hampering his progress, he performed well when healthy. Reuniting with his former offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic, VanDeMark is expected to thrive. Known for his strong run blocking and aggressive pass protection, he could become an elite lineman for Alabama if he improves his lateral quickness and overall speed.
These new additions are set to significantly enhance Alabama’s roster, addressing key areas of need and positioning the team for a successful 2024 season.
