**LSU Football Lands First Spring Transfer with DT Jay’Viar Suggs**
Nearly a month after the NCAA’s Spring Transfer Portal window opened, the LSU Tigers have secured their first incoming transfer. Grand Valley State defensive tackle Jay’Viar Suggs has committed to Brian Kelly and the LSU Football team, adding a much-needed boost to their defensive tackle depth. Suggs joins LSU with two years of eligibility remaining.
In 2023 at Grand Valley State, Suggs recorded 21 tackles, five sacks, and four pass breakups, demonstrating solid pass rush abilities with three sacks in 2022. Brian Kelly’s connections to Grand Valley State, where he coached from 1991 to 2003, likely played a significant role in landing Suggs. Additionally, Kelly’s son, Kenzel, played alongside Suggs at Grand Valley State.
The Tigers made their move late, offering Suggs a scholarship after he named a final six of USC, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Florida State, and Kentucky. Landing Suggs was crucial, as the team had previously missed out on several defensive tackle targets. Brian Kelly emphasized that the team wasn’t “in the market of buying players.”
Suggs is expected to start alongside Jacobian Guillory as the two primary defensive tackles for LSU’s defense. The Tigers might not be done adding to their roster, as they recently hosted Stephen F. Austin transfer defensive tackle Brandon Lane on an unofficial visit. Additionally, LSU is still in the running for former Tennessee players Wesley Walker and Tyler Baron.
**Bo Davis’ Impact**
LSU’s hiring of Bo Davis this off-season was aimed at enhancing their recruiting and player development efforts. Davis will prioritize developing the defensive tackles this summer, focusing on Jay’Viar Suggs and incoming freshman Dominick McKinley. If Davis can expedite their development, a position that was once a major concern could become a strength for LSU as the season progresses.
