Breaking: Vikings Make Final Call on $32 Million Free-Agent WR Ahead of Camp

### Vikings Decide Against Signing $32 Million Free-Agent WR Hunter Renfrow

The Minnesota Vikings have opted not to pursue free-agent wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, despite ongoing speculation that he could bolster their receiving corps. ESPN’s Kevin Seifert reported on May 23 that the Vikings are focusing on their internal options to fill the No. 3 wide receiver slot following K.J. Osborn’s departure to the New England Patriots in March.

Seifert noted that the Vikings made only minimal moves in free agency, including signing journeyman Trent Sherfield to a deal with $1 million guaranteed. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell had suggested Renfrow as a potential addition, but the Vikings appear committed to evaluating their current roster during OTAs.

Renfrow, 28, was released by the Las Vegas Raiders in March, just two years after signing a $32 million extension following his Pro Bowl season in 2021. That year, he recorded 103 receptions for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. However, his production declined due to injuries and changes in the Raiders’ coaching staff and quarterback.

### Internal Candidates for WR3

#### Brandon Powell: A Leading Contender

One reason for the Vikings’ internal focus is their confidence in veteran Brandon Powell. Seifert predicted that Powell, who had a career year in 2023, could be the biggest surprise this season by securing the No. 3 receiver role. During the Kevin O’Connell era, the Vikings have predominantly used 11 personnel, requiring three receivers. Powell stepped up last season when Justin Jefferson was sidelined with a hamstring injury, amassing 29 catches for 324 yards and a touchdown. He is seen as a strong candidate to complement Jefferson and Jordan Addison in 2024.

#### Jalen Nailor: A Dark Horse Candidate

Jalen Nailor, a former fifth-round pick, is also in the mix for the WR3 spot. Nailor showed promise during his rookie year, catching 9-of-13 targets for 179 yards and a touchdown in the final two games of the season. However, injuries limited his participation last year, resulting in minimal production. This season presents a crucial opportunity for Nailor to solidify his role in the Vikings’ offense.

### Conclusion

The Vikings’ decision to rely on internal candidates rather than signing Hunter Renfrow indicates their belief in the potential of players like Brandon Powell and Jalen Nailor. As the team heads into training camp, the competition for the No. 3 wide receiver position will be closely watched, with both Powell and Nailor vying to establish themselves as key contributors in Minnesota’s offense.
