The Cleveland Browns have signed free agent wide receiver Matt Landers, filling their roster to the maximum 90 players as they commence organized team activities. Landers, who stands over 6’4″ and weighed 200 pounds when he left the University of Arkansas, began his college career at Georgia before transferring to Toledo for the 2021 season. He finished his college career at Arkansas in 2022, leading the Razorbacks with 47 receptions for 901 yards and eight touchdowns.
Despite going undrafted, Landers spent time on the practice squads of the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers in 2023. He also played in the UFL with the Arlington Renegades and San Antonio Brahmas before being waived by the Bulls on April 9th.
The Browns are intrigued by Landers’ athletic potential. At the NFL Scouting Combine, he showcased impressive physical abilities, including a 4.37-second 40-yard dash, a 37-inch vertical jump, and a 10’10” broad jump. His pro day performance included a 6.86-second 3-cone drill and a 4.32-second shuttle run. These metrics are particularly impressive given his size.
Signing Landers represents a low-risk move for the Browns. His athleticism could potentially yield high rewards, and if it doesn’t work out, the team only loses a roster spot. Landers’ presence could also provide valuable preparation for the Browns’ young cornerbacks, helping them train against a receiver with his physical profile.
Although Landers faces stiff competition to make the Browns’ final roster, securing a practice squad position would still be a significant achievement. His success in this role could lead to further opportunities down the line.
