Breaking: Vegas Golden Knights Confirm In Talk To Release Top Experienced Star

### Jonathan Marchessault Discusses Contract Talks with Golden Knights

The future of Jonathan Marchessault with the Vegas Golden Knights remains uncertain as contract negotiations are ongoing.

Speaking at the World Series of Poker on May 28, Marchessault revealed that he has yet to receive a call regarding a new contract. “They said they were interested in definitely re-signing me and we’ll see. Technically they have time until June 30, so we’ll see how it goes,” he stated.

With only a month left until free agency begins, the team has not yet contacted Marchessault for negotiations. “The Golden Knights want to be good every year, so they’re probably exploring all their options,” Marchessault added.

At the beginning of May, Marchessault expressed his desire to remain in Vegas, saying, “I’ve done everything I can to stay here.”

### Vegas GM Kelly McCrimmon’s Perspective

Marchessault has been a pivotal player for the Golden Knights since their inception, helping lead the team to its first Stanley Cup in 2023 and earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. General Manager Kelly McCrimmon has emphasized the importance of re-signing Marchessault, citing his value both on and off the ice.

“We really like the player, and his value extends beyond what you see on the ice. He’s an important guy in our dressing room, so there’s certainly a real strong willingness from both sides to have real good discussions,” McCrimmon said on May 7.

However, Marchessault noted that contract discussions were postponed last summer, with no talks occurring during the season. “I asked last summer… they said they’re not ready to do that, and after there’s not even a single talk that I’ve had during the season,” he explained.

Marchessault, who signed a six-year, $30 million deal in January 2018, is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

The Golden Knights’ Roster Strategy

The Golden Knights are known for their strategic and sometimes ruthless approach to roster management, including the use of long-term injured reserve and trade deadline acquisitions. Recent additions like Tomas Hertl and Noah Hanifin could signal potential changes, with Hanifin receiving a substantial eight-year contract.

Potential Draft Strategy Shift

Kevin Allen of Vegas Hockey Now suggested that the Golden Knights might keep their first-round draft pick to draft a forward and engage fans during the 2024 NHL Draft, which will be held in Las Vegas. This approach contrasts with their usual strategy of trading draft picks for experienced players.

If the Golden Knights draft a young player and move on from Marchessault, it could free up cap space to strengthen other positions or re-sign other expiring contracts. Along with Marchessault, other key pending free agents include Anthony Mantha, Chandler Stephenson, William Carrier, Michael Amadio, Pavel Dorofeyev, and Alec Martinez.
