Latest Phins News: Just In Miami Dolphins Confirm On The Verge Of Landing $196 Million Free Agent

How Surprising AFC Contender Miami Dolphins Are Linked to $196 Million Free Agent Ryan Tannehill

The Miami Dolphins, an unexpected AFC contender, are reportedly considering signing free agent Ryan Tannehill, valued at $196 million. This move would provide insurance for their star quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, given the limited depth behind him with Mike White and Skylar Thompson. Tannehill, whose days as a regular starter are over, could potentially end his career with the team that originally drafted him.

Tannehill, the No. 8 draft pick in 2012, served as the Dolphins’ starter from 2012 to 2018 before playing the last four seasons with the Titans. With 151 career starts, he brings valuable experience that surpasses the current depth chart. Despite changes in the Dolphins’ coaching staff, including Mike McDaniel’s current tenure, Tannehill’s familiarity with the team could be beneficial. A one-year contract would likely be affordable and a fitting end to his career.

Though Tannehill’s prime is behind him, he still offers value. The Dolphins could release White to free up $3.5 million in cap space, simplifying the addition of Tannehill given their current $1.89 million cap space. Throughout his career, Tannehill has maintained a 64.3% completion rate, with an 81-70 record and a 2-3 playoff record.

Tannehill could serve as a reliable backup for Tagovailoa, especially given his success in 2020 when he recorded 3,819 yards and 33 touchdowns with a talented receiver roster. With the Dolphins’ current lineup, including Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and potentially Odell Beckham Jr., Tannehill could thrive if needed.

Despite a challenging 2023 season, where he started eight games before being replaced by Will Levis, Tannehill still managed 4,152 passing yards and 17 touchdowns over the past two seasons. While not a threat to Tagovailoa’s position, Tannehill’s potential return to Miami could provide valuable depth and experience. The Dolphins are hopeful to finalize a deal with him before the upcoming season.
