Rashod Bateman’s Unexpected Contract Extension with the Ravens**
Rashod Bateman doesn’t claim to understand the intricacies of NFL management—he just plays the game. This offseason, following the Ravens’ AFC championship loss, Bateman was unsure about his future, uncertain if he would be traded, extended, or play out his rookie contract. General Manager Eric DeCosta spoke positively about Bateman but remained silent on his future as the deadline for his fifth-year option approached.
On April 24, Bateman unexpectedly signed a two-year, $12.871 million contract extension. “The extension definitely came out of nowhere,” Bateman said at organized team activities. “It shows they believe in me and my work ethic. The team wants to keep me. So it was a no-brainer.”
Bateman feels he still has much to accomplish in Baltimore, a sentiment echoed by his coaches. Head coach John Harbaugh, offensive coordinator Todd Monken, and wide receivers coach Greg Lewis all emphasized the importance of getting the ball to Bateman more often. Harbaugh predicted Bateman will play a significant role next season, while Monken expects substantial growth from him, especially since Bateman missed the previous offseason.
Despite a lack of catches, Lewis believes Bateman has been doing everything right in practices and games. Pro Football Focus noted Bateman’s impressive separation grades, indicating he often got open but wasn’t targeted or received catchable balls.
Bateman acknowledged he could have improved in some areas as a wide receiver, but his potential was evident during recent OTAs. He made notable catches, including a deep ball from quarterback Josh Johnson and a challenging grab that impressed the sidelines.
Last season, Bateman struggled with his chemistry with Lamar Jackson, one of the league’s worst downfield connections. Bateman attributed this to his injury and lack of offseason practice. He focused on returning to the field after foot surgery, missing all of the 2023 training camp but returning in time for the season, which disrupted the team’s game plan.
This offseason, Bateman is healthy and participating fully in team activities. He hasn’t had a healthy offseason since entering the league, and his presence is already making a difference. Though not vocal, Bateman’s professionalism in practices, workouts, and film study is influencing the younger players.
“I’m not looking to do anything special,” Bateman said. “I can only control my work ethic every single day. This offseason, I’ve been grinding day in and day out. Hopefully, the opportunity comes to showcase that.”
