With the Mets, these three have performed far better than they did with the teams they were players for in 2023.
The New York Mets season is only two months old, and things haven’t exactly gone as planned. At best, the team is mediocre. If there is one encouraging development from the first two months, it is the success of a few of the free agent additions.
The Mets were eager to recruit players to quick contracts that only included a single year of guaranteed income. They’ve been fortunate to be selected from a large pool of players in need of a bounce-back campaign.
The ball team has benefited greatly from these three Mets free agents, especially after a terrible 2023 campaign.
First, Luis Severino
Luis Severino’s year couldn’t have gone any worse. With a 6.65 ERA in 18 starts and one relief appearance, his record was 4-8. When you consider his history of ailments, he wasn’t the most alluring free agent acquisition the Mets could have made.
You get the idea. Severino has performed admirably. Twice, he has carried no-hitters into late innings. His record after ten starts is 2-2 with a 3.22 ERA.
Severino isn’t a particularly prolific strikeout pitcher, fanning batters at a rate of 7.7 out of 9. He may be a little more advanced. His strolls have also increased. He walked batters in the New York Yankees lineup at a rate of 2.8 per nine. This season, he is batting 4 for 9 for the Mets.
One of the largest disparities is the quantity of home runs he has surrendered. Half of his career total as a Yankee, the rate increased to 2.3 per 9 last year from only 0.6 per 9 this season. This season, Severino leads the team in groundball percentage (51.5%) and line drive percentage (15.8%). He isn’t having a lot of luck to get by. A fearless performer who doesn’t back down, the biggest disappointment of this free agent signing might be that it was only a one-year deal.
