Chargers Signed Former Raiders OT in the first round.
In order to provide some up-front protection for starting quarterback Derek Carr, the Las Vegas Raiders made a contentious selection in the 2021 NFL Draft a few years ago when they selected offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood with the 17th overall choice.
The move backfired horribly for Las Vegas, though, as Leatherwood struggled from the start and never worked out for the Raiders, which led to the organization unexpectedly dismissing the former Alabama Crimson Tide player.
Following his departure from the Raiders in 2022, Leatherwood, a former first-round draft pick, made a few moves around the league. He signed a short-term deal with the Chicago Bears before joining the Cleveland Browns practice squad.
According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, Leatherwood’s tenure in Cleveland was brief due to the ongoing trend, and he has since signed with the Los Angeles Chargers, the Raiders’ fierce division foe.
Currently, many have called Leatherwood a first-round draft bust, and he’s only searching for another opportunity to show himself to an NFL team. His career has been going in the wrong direction for a while.
Playing for new Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh may be just what Leatherwood needs to reach his full potential in the NFL, even though he still has a lot to prove to make the final roster. If this doesn’t work out, he may be out of a job as a professional in the league forever.
