Analyst Suggests Eagles’ $38 Million Star as Potential Cut Candidate**
The Philadelphia Eagles might benefit from parting ways with one of their key veteran players, cornerback James Bradberry. Pro Football Network’s Tony Catalina suggests that Bradberry could be a candidate for a post-June 1 cut or trade. The 30-year-old cornerback had a poor 2023 season, culminating in a disappointing playoff performance where he allowed five receptions for 108 yards, a touchdown, and four first downs in the Eagles’ 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Catalina argues that the Eagles could save significant money by designating Bradberry as a post-June 1 cut, noting they already have potential replacements in rookies Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. “Bradberry has a $15.1 million dead cap hit for 2024, but cutting him post-June 1 would reduce that number to $4.3 million,” Catalina wrote, highlighting the potential savings of over $10 million.
Bradberry is on a three-year, $38 million contract with $20 million guaranteed. However, David Neisz of Philly Sports Network points out that Bradberry is only set to receive the guaranteed $20 million, much of which is deferred into future void years.
“The four void years are 2026-2029, but bonuses start in 2025. Five years of equal bonus payouts of $3.319 million total $16.5 million,” Neisz explained. “Combined with his base salaries and bonuses, Bradberry is guaranteed $20 million, but he is unlikely to see the remaining $18 million of the $38 million contract.”
**Why the Eagles Might Move on From James Bradberry**
The Eagles have options regarding Bradberry’s future. The former All-Pro had a stellar 2022 season with a defensive grade of 74.1 and a coverage grade of 80.2 from Pro Football Focus. However, his performance dropped significantly in 2023, with career-low grades of 56.6 in defense and 54.7 in coverage.
Philadelphia’s decision to use their first two draft picks of 2024 on cornerbacks suggests Bradberry’s time with the team might be nearing its end. They could either retain him in hopes he rebounds in 2024 or cut ties after June 1 and start Mitchell or DeJean opposite Darius Slay.
**Bradberry’s Future and Spirits**
Despite the uncertainty, Bradberry remains in good spirits, as noted by teammate Darius Slay. “I talk to Bradberry all the time. He’s in good spirits,” Slay said during OTAs. “He’s made a lot of money, played well, been an All-Pro and Pro Bowler. We’ve talked, and he’s in good spirits.”
The Eagles’ decision regarding Bradberry will unfold before training camp, with plenty of potential replacements available if they choose to move on.
