Following the 2018 season, Marvin Lewis’s term as head coach of the NFL came to an end. However, he will return to the sidelines as a member of Antonio Pierce’s Raiders staff in the upcoming season.
When Josh McDaniels was let go, the latter accepted the position of interim head coach in Vegas. Only a year had passed since Pierce, 45, began working for the team as the linebackers coach. Because of his inexperience, he turned to several seasoned staff members, including Lewis, for help. Unsurprisingly, one of the main reasons Lewis decided to return to teaching was the chance to maintain that bond.
When Lewis first met Pierce as a player, in 2022, Pierce was Washington’s defensive coordinator. The two later collaborated at Arizona State during Pierce’s time as a Sun Devil (2018–21). Before being employed full-time, Pierce received the support of several players for leading a solid defensive effort to end the 2023 season. When Lewis returns to coaching in the NFL, he will undoubtedly be greatly relied upon as the assistant head coach.
During his one-and-done DC position in the nation’s capital, the 65-year-old last held a non-head coaching role in the professional ranks. After his time with the Bengals came to an end, there was interest in hiring him as head coach. However, rather than waiting for that chance, Lewis chose to get back together with Pierce in an effort to start a new chapter in their partnership. It will be interesting to observe how they perform throughout the course of a complete season in 2024.
