Steve Sarkisian Outlines Plans for Texas Ahead of SEC Transition
Steve Sarkisian is preparing for his first season as an SEC member as the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners join the conference this fall.
Texas ended its final Big 12 season triumphantly, winning the Big 12 Championship against the Oklahoma State Cowboys and securing a spot in the College Football Playoff. Despite the playoff not going as hoped, it was still a successful season. In 2024, Texas will see the return of quarterback Quinn Ewers and several other key players.
In a Wednesday interview with Sirius XM, Sarkisian discussed the early stages of rebuilding Texas. His goal from the beginning was to create a team capable of competing with top college football programs consistently and to aim for national titles.
“When I took the job and met with Chris Del Conte and Jay Hartzell, our president, we discussed what was needed and how to build it,” Sarkisian said. “I said we need to build a roster that can compete with and ultimately beat teams like Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Ohio State, and Notre Dame. The goal at Texas is to win a national championship.”
When asked by Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte and president Jay Hartzell about what was needed before moving to the SEC, Sarkisian felt Texas was on the right track.
“So, when they told me about the move to the SEC and asked what needed to change, I said, ‘Nothing.’ Because that’s what we were already building for,” Sarkisian stated.
Texas will start this season against Colorado State on August 31, with their first SEC game against Mississippi State on September 28.
