Breaking: Las Vegas Raiders Confirm On The Verge On Completing The Signing Of 4-Time All-Pro To Strengthen Key Position

Raiders Could Bolster Safety Position by Signing Ex-Broncos 4-Time All-Pro

The Las Vegas Raiders had a dependable safety duo in Tre’von Moehrig and Marcus Epps last season, with both playing all 17 games. However, Epps did not record a single interception, highlighting his strength as a run-stopper rather than a coverage specialist.

This presents an opportunity for the Raiders to upgrade their safety position by signing former Denver Broncos safety and four-time All-Pro, Justin Simmons, who is currently a free agent. Simmons, a proven ballhawk with 30 career interceptions, could significantly enhance the Raiders’ pass defense. Epps would still contribute in the run game, while Simmons would bring a higher level of coverage ability. Simmons was an All-Pro as recently as last season, indicating he remains in top form.

At 30, Simmons may not have many years left at his peak, but there’s no reason to believe he has declined significantly since the end of the last season. His asking price is likely lower due to the late stage of free agency, making him a potentially valuable acquisition for the Raiders at a reasonable cost.

Marcus Epps’ Standing with the Team

One reason the Raiders might hesitate to sign Simmons is the high regard they have for Marcus Epps. Epps, a team captain, is highly valued by the coaching staff. Safeties coach Gerald Alexander praised Epps for his discipline and leadership.

“He plays a clean game, and what I mean by that is he does all the little things right,” Alexander said during a June 4 press conference. “First and foremost, having a really good understanding of what his responsibility is, where he’s supposed to be, having an understanding of how to move out there on the field, getting his alignment and his teammates in positions to also do the things that they need to do. That’s what it comes down to, being a primary role of a communicator.”

While Epps may not generate many turnovers, his reliability and leadership are invaluable to the team’s young secondary.

Emerging Young Talent

Another factor reducing the likelihood of signing Simmons is the Raiders’ investment in young safeties. Chris Smith II, a fifth-round pick last year, saw limited action but has potential. Isaiah Pola-Mao, who notched his first career interception last season, could see a larger role. Additionally, rookie seventh-round pick Trey Taylor has shown promise and might become a draft steal.

The Raiders’ safety unit appears deep and promising, potentially making Simmons more interested in joining a team with a greater immediate need for his skills. However, if the Raiders encounter issues in practice or face injuries, Simmons could quickly become a prime target.
