ESPN Report: New Orleans Saints Now Leading Kansas City Chief, Ravens And Panthers In The Race To Sign Top Experienced NFL Star

Chiefs and Saints Among Potential Suitors for $30 Million Free Agent

**Russell Gage: A Comeback in the Making?**

Free agent wide receiver Russell Gage had a tough 2023 season. After a serious concussion in the 2022 Wild Card Round, he aimed to prove his worth for the post-Brady Buccaneers. Unfortunately, a patellar tendon tear ended his season prematurely, leading to his release from the Buccaneers, who needed the cap space to re-sign key players like Mike Evans, Baker Mayfield, and Antoine Winfield.

Despite his injury history, Gage still holds value as a reliable second or third option in a passing game. In his last healthy season, he managed 51 receptions for 426 yards and five touchdowns, even while playing behind Evans and Chris Godwin. His best season in 2020 saw him record 72 receptions for 786 yards and four touchdowns. Though he may not return to peak form, Gage still has the potential to secure a roster spot.

**Chiefs and Saints Leading the Pack**

Among potential suitors, the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints stand out. The Chiefs, despite having three dependable receivers in Marquise Brown, Xavier Worthy, and Rashee Rice, face Rice’s suspension. Gage, a possession receiver like Rice, could fill this gap effectively. If Michael Thomas proves too costly, Gage could be a viable alternative.

For the Saints, who have one of the league’s weakest offensive lines, a quick-release option for Derek Carr is crucial. Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed are solid, but the team lacks a reliable short-range target. Gage fits this role perfectly and would be an affordable addition for the cap-strapped Saints.

**Other Potential Teams**

– **Baltimore Ravens:**

With top targets like Mark Andrews and Zay Flowers, and high hopes for Rashod Bateman, the Ravens could benefit from Gage as a backup plan. His ability to run short and intermediate routes would provide a safety net for Lamar Jackson.

– **Los Angeles Chargers:**

Superstar Justin Herbert needs more reliable receiving options. Even with rookie Ladd McConkey, the Chargers could use Gage’s quick-release abilities to thrive in a run-heavy, short-yardage offense.

– **Carolina Panthers:** The Panthers are banking on first-round pick Xavier Legette, but if he struggles to adjust, Gage would be a solid, low-risk addition. With Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen on the outside, Gage could excel as a slot receiver, making crucial catches over the middle.

Russell Gage’s comeback story remains unwritten, but with several teams in need of his skill set, a successful return to the NFL is within reach.
