Trevon Diggs ‘in a Good Spot’ Returning from ACL Injury
The Dallas Cowboys are poised to have a strong cornerback position in 2024, especially if they re-sign Stephon Gilmore. Head coach Mike McCarthy recently provided an update on Trevon Diggs’ return from his ACL injury.
Potential Start on PUP List
McCarthy mentioned that Diggs “looks great” in his recovery. However, there is a possibility that Diggs will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. NFL insider Michael Gehlken from the Dallas Morning News reported that Diggs is “in a good spot.”
Training camp for the Cowboys starts in late July. Other staff members, including coach Al Harris, are optimistic about Diggs’ return. Harris expressed excitement about having both Diggs and DaRon Bland on the field.
Before his injury last season, Diggs was performing well. According to Pro Football Focus, he was targeted eight times, allowed two catches for 26 yards, had a 1.0 passer rating, broke up two passes, intercepted another, and dislodged a pass intended for Saquon Barkley, which DaRon Bland returned for a touchdown.
Outlook for 2024
While re-signing Stephon Gilmore might be too costly, Jourdan Lewis has been secured on a one-year deal worth $2.8275 million guaranteed. The Cowboys also have young talent like Eric Scott Jr. and Caelen Carson.
The return of Trevon Diggs is expected to significantly bolster the Cowboys’ defense, similar to the impact Gilmore had. Mike Zimmer’s defense will differ from Dan Quinn’s, bringing new dynamics to the team.
The 2024 season is crucial for the Cowboys, with Dak Prescott in a contract year and CeeDee Lamb awaiting a new deal. Micah Parsons, who has two years left on his contract, could see his value skyrocket if he wins the Defensive Player of the Year award.
Despite some initial adjustments, especially between Parsons and Zimmer, the team is looking forward to seeing Diggs back in action alongside Bland and the rest of the defense. Eric Kendricks has already made a significant impact as a leader.
