Texas Longhorns Lose Starting CB to NCAA Transfer Portal
The Texas Longhorns have experienced a significant loss as their starting cornerback, Terrance Brooks, announced his intention to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. This marks the most impactful departure for the Longhorns this offseason.
On Tuesday, Brooks declared his decision to transfer, potentially leaving a major gap in the team’s secondary for the upcoming season. Brooks is the eighth player from Texas to enter the portal since April, joining Derrian Brown, S’Maje Burrell, Billy Walton III, Payton Kirkland, J’Mond Tapp, Zac Swanson, Savion Red, and Ky Woods.
“I want to thank God, my family, and the Longhorn Nation for everything,” Brooks shared in a statement on X. “At this time, I will be entering into the transfer portal.”
With Brooks’ departure, the Longhorns face uncertainty at the cornerback position. It is anticipated that Malik Muhammad will take one starting spot, while Gavin Holmes could replace Brooks on the other side. Alternatively, Muhammad could be paired with either Jaylon Guilbeau or Jahdae Barron, with the other player remaining in the ‘star’ or nickel position.
The Longhorns also have Austin Jordan as a potential contributor, along with young talents like Wardell Mack and Kobe Black who could step up. Despite these options, Brooks’ exit is a significant setback for Texas.
Ranked as a five-star recruit, Brooks was the No. 24 player nationally, the No. 3 cornerback, and the No. 6 player in Texas per On3 coming out of high school. During his two seasons with the Longhorns, Brooks played in 23 games, starting 19, including 13 of 14 starts in 2023. Last season, he recorded 20 tackles, three interceptions, and six passes defended, earning honorable mention All-Big 12 honors for his performance.
