The Boston Celtics are reportedly considering adding a well-regarded former New York Knicks head coach to their coaching staff. There are rumors within the NBA that the Celtics might replace Charles Lee with this former Knicks coach for next season.
As the Celtics prepare for Game 1 of their NBA Finals series against the Dallas Mavericks, the organization is focused on winning their eighteenth NBA title. However, they are also planning for the summer and the next season.
Regardless of the outcome of the finals, the Celtics will need to make adjustments for the 2024-25 season, including filling a coaching vacancy. Charles Lee, who spent one season with the Celtics, is set to become the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets after the finals.
Many coaches will likely be interested in this open position, but the Celtics may already have an excellent candidate in mind.
On Monday, NBA insider Marc Stein reported that there is speculation in coaching circles about Jeff Van Gundy joining the Celtics’ bench as an assistant to head coach Joe Mazzulla. Van Gundy, the former head coach of the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets, served as a consultant for the Celtics this season. Although he has been linked to various coaching positions since leaving Houston nearly two decades ago, he chose to focus on his role at ESPN. With his time at the sports network now over, Van Gundy might be ready to return to coaching.
Van Gundy, who led the Knicks to the NBA Finals in 1999, has a career coaching record of 430-318.
