Detroit Lions Bolster Defense with Linebacker Ben Niemann Signing

As offseason workouts conclude, the Detroit Lions have strengthened their defense by signing linebacker Ben Niemann, as reported by The Detroit News.

Niemann, who went undrafted out of Iowa, has played six NFL seasons. He spent his first four years with the Kansas City Chiefs, played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2022, and was with both the Tennessee Titans and Denver Broncos in 2023.

Over his career, Niemann has appeared in 86 games, starting 21 of them. With the Chiefs, he played in 62 games and started 12. In 2022, he played all 17 games for the Cardinals, starting nine, and participated in seven games for the Broncos in 2023.

Niemann has amassed 239 career tackles, two sacks, and eight tackles for loss as an inside linebacker. With the Broncos, he played exclusively on special teams, logging 134 snaps. Overall, he has 1,380 career special teams snaps, adding valuable experience to a phase highly valued by the Lions.

Detroit’s special teams unit already includes All-Pro linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who earned second-team AP honors and first-team NFLPA All-Pro honors for his special teams performance.

Although Niemann did not play for the Titans in 2023, he participated in their training camp, providing a connection to the Lions’ new defensive line coach, Terrell Williams, who previously coached the Titans’ defensive line.
