**Tennessee Pitcher AJ Russell Done for the Season, Set for Tommy John Surgery**
Tennessee right-hander AJ Russell has been officially ruled out for the season and will undergo Tommy John surgery, according to multiple reports. This decision came after Russell was sidelined last weekend during the Super Regionals, confirming his absence for the remainder of the NCAA Tournament.
Recovery from Tommy John surgery typically takes about a year, casting doubt on Russell’s availability for next season. Additionally, he is a highly regarded MLB prospect for 2025.
Russell last pitched in the SEC Tournament, appearing for one inning each against Vanderbilt and LSU. He appeared to aggravate his elbow during the championship game against LSU.
Initially poised to be Tennessee’s top starter this season, Russell’s year was marred by multiple injuries. Coming off an impressive freshman season with a 0.89 ERA over 30 innings, he was expected to take on a larger role. However, he managed only six appearances, pitching 14.1 innings and finishing with a 5.02 ERA.
Tennessee’s coach, Tony Vitello, commented on Russell’s situation last week, noting that while there are no specific plans yet for his recovery, Russell will be unavailable for the remainder of the year. In the meantime, Russell has taken on a coaching role within the team, participating in practices and assisting in the dugout.
The Volunteers will continue their season without Russell, a challenge they have faced for much of the year. Tennessee opens the College World Series on Friday night against Florida State.
