Good News: Mario Cristobal Confirm The Signing Of Another Top Talented DB Star To Bolster Squad Depth

Miami Football Lands First 2025 DB Commitment from 3-Star CB Timothy Merritt

Timothy Merritt, a three-star cornerback, is the first defensive back to commit to the Miami Hurricanes’ 2025 football recruiting class. Merritt, who attends Birmingham Parker, is the 451st ranked player nationally, the 37th ranked cornerback, and the 18th ranked player in Alabama for the 2025 class.

Standing at 6’2″ and weighing 180 pounds, Merritt brings significant length to Miami’s defensive lineup. The Hurricanes secured his commitment over Arkansas and Tennessee. Merritt cited the strong relationship he developed with Miami’s defensive backs coach, Chevis Jackson, as a key factor in his decision.

Despite his commitment, Merritt still plans to visit Tennessee officially next weekend and Arkansas in two weeks. His visit to Miami’s Coral Gables campus this past weekend was his first official visit there. According to On3, Merritt had previously taken nine unofficial visits to other programs.

Merritt had visited Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi, and Tennessee twice each and Arkansas once. On3 had projected Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, and Auburn as the leading contenders for his commitment before he chose Miami.

Merritt is the second defensive player to commit to Miami’s 2025 class, joining four-star linebacker Elijah Melendez, who has been committed since December. Merritt was one of two cornerbacks visiting Coral Gables officially this weekend, along with three-star CB Mark Manfred.

While primarily a cornerback, Merritt is also capable of playing safety. His addition continues Miami’s trend of recruiting tall cornerbacks, which includes 6’2″ sophomore Damari Brown and 2024 signee Dylan Day. This height is expected to create challenging matchups for opposing wide receivers.

Mark Manfred, another prospect with excellent length at 6’2″, also visited Miami. Head coach Mario Cristobal, defensive coordinator Lance Guidry, and coach Jackson are clearly prioritizing taller cornerbacks. The coaching staff presented Merritt with a three-year development plan, according to multiple recruiting sources.
