Done Deal: Vegas Golden Knights Confirm To Complete Trade For Another Top Experienced Star

Hypothetical Trade Suggests Sending Mitch Marner to Golden Knights

The Toronto Maple Leafs might have a potential trade partner in the Vegas Golden Knights if they decide to move Mitch Marner ahead of the 2024-25 season. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on June 12 that there is speculation about a possible trade destination for Marner, as discussed on The Leaf’s Nation podcast. Friedman mentioned that several people believe the Golden Knights could be interested in Marner due to their track record of pursuing high-profile players.

A trade package from Vegas could include defenseman Shea Theodore and goaltender Logan Thompson. However, Friedman clarified that these discussions are speculative, and no formal trade offer has been made to the Leafs.

Mitch Marner: A Top Forward on the Market

Since his debut in the 2016–17 NHL season, Mitch Marner has been a key player for the Toronto Maple Leafs. If he becomes available for trade, he would be one of the top players on the market. Marner has played 576 games for Toronto, scoring 194 goals and providing 445 assists for a total of 639 points. He set a team record with 42 assists in his rookie season and has been a consistent top performer. In the 2024 season, Marner scored 26 goals and 59 assists for 85 points in 69 regular-season games and added one goal and two assists in seven playoff games before the Leafs were eliminated by the Boston Bruins in the first round.

Uncertain Future for Marner in Toronto

Marner’s future with the Maple Leafs is uncertain as he enters the final season of a six-year, $65.4 million contract. Leafs’ management has expressed a willingness to consider all trade options to improve the team’s competitiveness, especially in the playoffs. The Leafs have been eliminated in the first round in seven of the last eight years. Leafs GM Brad Treliving emphasized that everything must be considered following a disappointing season. Reports suggest that everyone on the team is available for trade discussions except for Auston Matthews and William Nylander. However, Marner’s no-movement clause allows him to block any trade.

Leafs GM Addresses Marner Trade Rumors

Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving addressed the rumors about Marner at the NHL combine, advising caution regarding such speculations. He emphasized Marner’s value to the team and stated that any trade discussions would be handled privately between the team and Marner’s agent, Darren Ferris. Treliving reiterated the team’s commitment to exploring all options to improve during the offseason but noted that any move would be carefully considered and not made hastily.
