Originally from Elk Grove, Calif., Davis was selected in the fifth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays but did not sign. He was later selected by Houston in the third round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft from Cal State Fullerton. Davis was traded to the New York Mets along with infielder Cody Bohanek for outfielder Ross Adolph, catcher Scott Manea, and infielder Luis Santana on January 6, 2019. He was then traded to San Francisco along with left-hander Thomas Szapucki, right-hander Carson Seymour, and left-hander Nick Zwack in exchange for infielder Darin Ruf on August 2, 2022.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees transferred right-hander Nick Burdi to the 60-day injured list.
