Cam Akers was never at his best when playing with the Los Angeles Rams.
He was talented, but there was always something missing, and eventually, some unreported off-field conflicts between him and the organization caused him to leave.
He was anticipated to have a big season with the Minnesota Vikings, but an Achilles injury that ended the season dashed those expectations.
The Vikings, however, aren’t prepared to give up on the 25-year-old.
If he passes a physical, the team may re-sign him, according to insider Charley Walters (via The Purple Persuasion).
With Aaron Jones in the building, the Vikings improved their running back game considerably. However, they still need a backup, especially considering Jones’ recent history of injuries. This is where Akers comes into play.
The majority of Akers’ 167 yards of running last season came from Minnesota.
Though he isn’t as explosive as Ty Chandler, he seems to be the more dependable option as an RB2, having shown potential in the five games he played with the team prior to sustaining that Achilles injury.
If Akers performs poorly in Minnesota, he still has a lot of work ahead of him in this league and may be able to play his way into a larger position elsewhere. He might be acquired by the Vikings for a very reasonable price.
Establishing the running game will be crucial for Kevin O’Connell, who will be running the offense with Sam Darnold and J.J. McCarthy. For that reason, this move might make perfect sense.
