Auburn Tigers News: Jake Thornton on Recruiting, TE Expected to Recommit
In today’s edition of Auburn Tigers News, offensive line coach Jake Thornton discusses high school recruiting, and a former tight end commit is expected to return to Auburn football.
Head coach Hugh Freeze inherited a significant issue with Auburn’s offensive line. For years, the Tigers struggled to recruit quality o-linemen, necessitating extensive efforts to improve the position group.
In their first year, Thornton and Freeze heavily relied on the transfer portal to fill gaps in the offensive line but recognized that high school recruiting was essential for long-term success.
“That’s why I came to Auburn because I believe in coach Freeze,” Thornton said, according to Auburn Undercover. “When we discussed the job, he said, ‘I want to build this thing with high school players.’ I was eager to join because I entered college coaching to help high school players develop and achieve their goals.
“Recruiting high school players allows us to find the right fits for our offensive strategy, o-line needs, and team culture.”
With key returners like Connor Lew and Jeremiah Wright, along with new additions and younger players, Auburn’s offensive line is poised for improvement in the 2024 season.
Former Tight End Commit Expected to Rejoin Auburn
Three-star tight end Hollis Davidson, from Peachtree City, Georgia, initially committed to Auburn in February after attending the Tigers’ Junior Day. However, he withdrew his commitment in May, stating he had made his decision too soon.
Despite his decommitment, Auburn maintained contact with Davidson, the #31 tight end in the 2025 recruiting class. Florida State also showed strong interest, making the recruitment competitive. Davidson is set to announce his decision on July 4, choosing between Auburn and FSU.
While the Seminoles gained traction after his decommitment, indicators suggest Davidson will rejoin Auburn’s 2025 class. On3’s Jeffrey Lee recently predicted his return to the Tigers. If he chooses Auburn, Davidson will be the second tight end commit for the class of 2025, joining Ryan Ghea.
