On Saturday, the San Antonio Spurs traded guard Devonte’ Graham and a second-round pick to the Charlotte Hornets. Shortly after, the Hornets waived the 29-year-old Graham, allowing him to become a free agent. The pick included in the trade is a 2025 second-round selection initially owned by the New Orleans Pelicans, which the Spurs had acquired earlier. Charlotte also provided cash considerations as part of the deal.
ESPN’s Bobby Marks reported that this trade leaves the Spurs approximately $26 million under the salary cap before Chris Paul’s contract signing.
Graham was entering the final year of a four-year contract he originally signed with the Hornets in 2021 through a sign-and-trade agreement with the Pelicans. For the 2024-25 season, he was set to earn $12.65 million, but only $2.85 million of that amount was guaranteed. The contract’s original guarantee date was July 1, but ESPN sources indicated it was postponed to July 8.
With the Spurs prioritizing younger talent, Graham had limited playing time last season, appearing in just 23 games. During these appearances, he averaged 5.0 points and 2.1 assists. In the final eight games of the season, where he averaged 23.6 minutes, he improved to 8.1 points and 3.5 assists per game.
