5 Free Agents the Dallas Mavericks Should Sign to Fill Backup Point Guard Role
As NBA free agency slows down, the Dallas Mavericks are still looking to fill an open roster spot to boost their chances of making the NBA Finals next season. While they aim to re-sign Markieff Morris, adding more backcourt depth is a priority. Here are five backup ball handlers the Mavericks should consider:
5. Malachi Flynn
Malachi Flynn could be an ideal bench player for the Mavericks, offering scoring and ball-handling skills. Last season, he averaged 5.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 0.6 steals per game while shooting 41.8% from the field and 33.1% from three-point range. His best performance was a 50-point game against the Atlanta Hawks. Flynn’s ability to create shots in the mid-range and at the rim, combined with his confident shooting, would make him a valuable asset for Dallas. At 26 years old, Flynn fits the Mavericks’ strategy of acquiring young players ready to contribute immediately.
4. Dennis Smith Jr.
A familiar face to Mavericks fans, Dennis Smith Jr. could bring much-needed backcourt depth and elite defense. Since being traded as part of the Kristaps Porzingis deal, Smith Jr. has developed into one of the best guard defenders in the NBA. His defensive skills, combined with his athleticism and improved playmaking, make him a strong candidate to lead the Mavericks’ second unit. Smith Jr. could be signed for a bargain, providing excellent value for the team.
3. Kyle Lowry
Although not yet linked to the Mavericks, Kyle Lowry offers the experience and skills the team needs in a backup guard. With 136 playoff games under his belt, Lowry can create, defend, and hit open shots, all while handling big moments. Last season, he averaged 8.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 0.9 steals per game, shooting 44.4% from the field and 40.4% from three-point range. Lowry’s veteran presence on a one-year deal could provide stability and leadership to the Mavericks’ second unit.
2. Spencer Dinwiddie
Spencer Dinwiddie, previously eyed by the Mavericks, could be the perfect addition to their roster. Although he had an inefficient season with the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers, Dinwiddie has proven he can thrive alongside Luka Doncic. He can play both on and off the ball, providing a scoring threat and additional playmaking. Signing Dinwiddie to a veteran minimum contract would be a significant steal and could help him regain his form.
1. Markelle Fultz
Markelle Fultz, the former No. 1 overall pick, has had a decent career but has yet to meet expectations. Playing alongside Luka Doncic could be the key to revitalizing his career. Fultz averaged 7.8 points per game last season, down from 14 points per game the previous season. At 6-foot-4 with a 6-foot-9 wingspan, Fultz has the tools to be a strong defender, an area where the Mavericks need improvement. Although his three-point shooting is weak, his defensive effort and playmaking could make him a worthwhile gamble on a veteran minimum contract.
By strategically filling their roster with one of these players, the Mavericks can strengthen their backcourt and enhance their chances of making a deep playoff run next season.
