**Bruins Make Unexpected Choice with Starting Goalie**
The Boston Bruins surprised many by opting not to take contract negotiations with Jeremy Swayman to salary arbitration. This decision comes after trading Vezina Trophy Winner Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators, leaving Swayman, who previously shared goaltending duties with Ullmark, as the primary netminder.
Swayman, 25, is poised for a significant role increase and is seeking a long-term contract. Last season, salary arbitration awarded him $3.475 million. This year, the Bruins extended a qualifying offer to Swayman, ensuring he would make at least the same salary next season.
However, both parties chose not to pursue arbitration again in 2024, which is typically a strategy for restricted free agents to secure better deals.
This decision might suggest a positive development in negotiations. Avoiding arbitration implies that Swayman and the Bruins are close to reaching an agreement on a long-term extension without needing a third-party mediator.
