The New York Mets, despite being in the all-star break, have made a minor trade with the Minnesota Twins, sending veteran infielder Rylan Bannon to the Twins. The details of the trade are expected to involve cash.
Rylan Bannon, a former top prospect featured in the trade that sent Manny Machado to the Los Angeles Dodgers, has had limited MLB experience. He has played parts of two seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, and Houston Astros, making just 21 plate appearances with a .100 batting average.
Bannon joined the Mets on a minor league contract in December and played 79 games for Triple-A Syracuse, posting a .254/.392/.475 slash line with 15 home runs, 57 RBIs, seven steals, and an impressive 17.5% walk rate. He played multiple positions, including second base, third base, shortstop, and both outfield corners.
The trade makes sense for the Mets due to the logjam at the positions Bannon plays. Trading him allows the Mets to get some value, likely cash, for a player who would likely leave in the offseason. It also frees up Bannon’s 342 plate appearances for other potential impact players.
