Official Mets News: New York Mets Confirm To Decline New Contract With Mets And Announce He Wants To Leave

The New York Mets traded infielder Rylan Bannon to the Minnesota Twins during the All-Star break. The exchange, likely for cash, was confirmed by Ben Yoel.

Bannon, a former top prospect involved in the Manny Machado trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers, has played parts of two MLB seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, and Houston Astros. He has made 21 plate appearances, going 2-for-20 with a walk and eight strikeouts.

Bannon joined the Mets on a minor league contract in December and played 79 games for Triple-A Syracuse. He hit .254/.392/.475 with 15 home runs, 57 RBIs, seven steals, and 60 walks, achieving a 17.5% walk rate. He played multiple positions, including second base, third base, shortstop, and both outfield corners.

While Bannon’s trade might surprise some, it addresses the Mets’ roster logjam at his positions. Given the competition for call-ups and Bannon’s likely departure in the offseason, the Mets opted to gain value now, even if it’s just cash. This move also frees up his 342 plate appearances for other potential impact players.
