Good News: Ex-Cowboys Starter Confirm He Wants To Join Eagles In Free Agency

Former Dallas Cowboys starter Jayron Kearse could potentially be picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency. Kearse, who established himself as a key player in the Cowboys’ secondary, has been a free agent since the end of the last season. Sports Illustrated writer Patrick McAvoy suggests that Kearse would be a beneficial addition to the Eagles.

On July 16, McAvoy highlighted that Kearse would be a cost-effective option for the Eagles, who have ample cap space and are looking to add depth to their roster. He pointed out that the Eagles might be hesitant to make a big splash in the safety market as they plan to try James Bradberry at the position. However, adding Kearse would provide valuable depth without a significant financial commitment.

This potential move would have notable implications for the Cowboys, who are transitioning with a new defensive coordinator, Mike Zimmer. Although Dallas has decided to move on from Kearse, seeing him join a division rival like the Eagles would be less than ideal given his familiarity with the Cowboys’ system and the NFC East.

Kearse joined the Cowboys in 2021 after stints with the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions, where he made only 12 career starts over five years. In Dallas, he seized the opportunity to become a regular starter, setting career highs in interceptions (2), passes defended (10), and tackles for loss (9) in his first year.

The Cowboys rewarded his performance with a two-year, $10 million contract extension. However, his production dipped slightly in subsequent seasons, leading Dallas to move forward with Malik Hooker and Donovan Wilson in their secondary.

As Kearse remains unsigned, another former Cowboys player, linebacker Damien Wilson, might also find himself on the market. Wilson, who returned to Dallas in 2023 after winning a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs, could be a candidate for release due to a crowded linebacker room and the emergence of younger talents like Markquese Bell and DeMarvion Overshown.

Wilson’s role was minimal last season, and with new faces vying for spots, his position on the team is uncertain. Both Kearse and Wilson face uncertain futures, but their potential moves could significantly impact the dynamics of their respective teams.
