Dallas Mavericks point guard Kyrie Irving recently underwent surgery to fix a broken left hand he injured during training earlier this month, the team announced on Tuesday.
While there is no specific timeline for the 32-year-old’s return, ESPN reported that the Mavericks are hopeful Irving will be ready for the start of training camp in a few months.
Irving, an eight-time All-Star, played a crucial role alongside Luka Doncic in leading Dallas to the NBA Finals, where they were defeated by the Boston Celtics in five games last month. During the playoffs, Irving averaged 22.1 points and 5.1 assists over 22 games, following a regular season where he posted 25.6 points and 5.2 assists per game.
He was aiming for his second NBA championship, having won his first with Cleveland in 2016. The Cavaliers had selected him as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.
Over his 13-season career, Irving has averaged 23.6 points and 5.7 assists, playing for Cleveland, Boston, the Brooklyn Nets, and Dallas. He joined the Mavericks through a trade with the Nets in February 2023 and signed an extension with Dallas the following offseason.
Irving also played a significant role in attracting free agent Klay Thompson to the Mavericks earlier this month; Thompson had spent his entire career with the Golden State Warriors.
