The Dallas Mavericks, who lost to the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals, have nearly finished building their lineup.
Though the Mavs lost Tim Hardaway Jr. and Derrick Jones Jr., they gained Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall, and Quentin Grimes. There is still one roster space remaining for the team, though.
One free agent the organization may choose to re-sign is a Dallas veteran who is a leader in the locker room and a favorite among fans. Nevertheless, signing him to a deal to fill the 15th roster position would be a dangerous move.
Markieff Morris’ re-signing with the Mavericks would be an expensive error.
Markieff Morris is the veteran who is available as a free agent. The crowd favorite was moved from Brooklyn to Dallas in 2023, where he gained instant popularity. This summer, he will be an unrestricted free agent. Dallas is unsure whether to sign him again because he hasn’t been signed yet.
It could be best for the Mavs to hunt for another free agent rather than re-sign Morris. Morris participated in 26 games in the previous campaign, the most of which were during garbage time.
The roster position would be useless in terms of on-court output with that many games played. Having two seasoned leaders who are both unplayable may be a hazardous move for the Mavs, who already have Dwight Powell in the locker room.
It would be preferable for the Mavs to sign a guy who is instantly ready to play. To bolster the backcourt in particular, the squad would benefit from a guard.
Malachi Flynn is one guy the Mavs could add. The 26-year-old guard is reportedly of interest to the Mavs. Flynn would arrive in Dallas and demonstrate that he is on the verge of realizing his promise. Grimes and Flynn were teammates in Detroit as well, so the two may be tight in Dallas.
Former Maverick Spencer Dinwiddie is another player the Mavs may choose to add to their roster to occupy the 15th position. Regarding Dinwiddie, he has demonstrated in the past that he can play effectively next to Luka Doncic and has Mavericks postseason experience. There were dormant rumors of Dinwiddie returning to Dallas around the beginning of April.
Even though Morris is adored by Mavs players, front office, and supporters, the Mavs wouldn’t be taking a greater risk than they think if they brought him back because he would hardly play. In an attempt to make a run at the NBA Finals the following season, it would make more sense for the Mavs to add a player who can play and contribute to winning soon.
All indications lead to Morris being re-signed by the Mavs, and it has been stated that Dallas wants to have him return. Only time will tell what Dallas chooses to do.
