After departing the now-retired Duke basketball icon Mike Krzyzewski’s staff in 2018 to take a job at Pitt, Capel is 97-92. He earned the ACC Coach of the Year award in 2023 and came in second place behind UNC’s Hubert Davis in that competition the previous season. His Panthers finished 2023–24 with an overall record of 22–11, but were not invited to the NCAA Tournament. In league play over the previous two years, they have a combined record of 26–14.

According to Panthers athletic director Heather Lyke, “Brick by brick, he built a rock-solid foundation that has Pitt basketball poised for a championship future.” “Jeff is an outstanding leader well beyond the court, and we are highly fortunate to have him representing the University of Pittsburgh.”
After playing a few seasons professionally after starting four seasons as a starter for the Blue Devil backcourt, Jeff Capel began his coaching career at Old Dominion as an assistant to his late father, Jeff Capel II.

After that, he started working at VCU, where he was appointed head coach in 2002.

After four years, Capel moved to Oklahoma. There, he stayed in charge until 2011, when he decided to separate ways and rejoin the Duke basketball team.
