Josh Richardson, a guard with the Miami Heat, was candid when discussing his decision to sign a minimum deal to rejoin the team in 2024–25.
Richardson responded, “To be honest, nobody wants to play on a minimum,” when asked if it was difficult to accept being paid minimal for two seasons in a row. Yes, though, I received offers when I returned for more. However, it resembles a crib. Thus, it’s one of those issues where you wonder, “What’s important?”
The seasoned guard’s 2023–24 campaign was cut short when he sustained a right shoulder injury that kept him out of the last two months of the regular season and Miami’s playoff matchup against the Boston Celtics.
This offseason, Richardson chose to exercise his $3.1 million player option rather than test free agency. Giving the Heat additional depth at the guard position moving into free agency, the acquisition undoubtedly benefitted the team.
During the 2023–24 season, Richardson played in 43 games with the Heat, averaging 9.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game while shooting 34.7 percent from beyond the arc and 44.4 percent from the field.
Richardson spent his first four seasons in the NBA with the Heat after being selected by Miami in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft. In addition, he has played for the Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, Philadelphia 76ers, Dallas Mavericks, and New Orleans Pelicans.
