Quintez Cephus, a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, has signed a contract with the Houston Texans, according to his agent.
Cephus spent three years in Detroit after being selected in the fifth round by the Lions in 2020. Cephus showed glimpses of an NFL player at times; in his first season, he caught 20 passes for 349 yards and two scores. Unfortunately, Cephus had to cope with injuries for the last two years of his playing career. In a Week 5 game against the Vikings in 2021, Cephus had a broken collarbone, which kept him out of the game for the remainder of the season. Cephus missed the last 13 games of the season due to an ankle injury the following season.
Cephus’s tenure in Detroit came to an end during the previous offseason when he was reportedly suspended indefinitely for wagering on an NFL game. The Lions cut him free right away.
When Cephus’ suspension was removed in April, he had a brief chance to play for the Buffalo Bills. However, the Bills cut Cephus less than two weeks after initially signing him, having selected Keon Coleman in the first round and added both Chase Claypool and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
Cephus will have the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities in training camp in Houston and join one of the most thrilling football offenses. After the Texans finished just 3-13-1 in 2022, rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud helped lead the team to an unlikely 10-7 season and a postseason victory last year. The Texans concluded the season with 13th-most points scored, and Stroud was named Offensive Rookie of the Year.
