**Saints Re-Sign All-Pro Returner **
The New Orleans Saints have re-signed their 25-year-old wide receiver and exclusive rights free agent Rashid Shaheed to a one-year, $5.2 million contract extension. This well-deserved deal secures the All-Pro and Pro Bowl return man from Weber State for another season.
Shaheed, an undrafted rookie in 2022, quickly became an impactful deep threat alongside star receiver Chris Olave. With another year of experience, Shaheed is expected to take on a more significant role if he stays healthy.
**Rashid Shaheed Returns to New Orleans for 2024**
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Saints have re-signed Shaheed for the 2024 season. In 2023, Shaheed recorded 46 catches for 719 yards and five touchdowns in 15 games. During his rookie year in 2022, he played 12 games, accumulating 28 catches for 488 yards and three total touchdowns.
Shaheed has shown his versatility with a rushing touchdown in his first year and a punt return touchdown last season. With an expanded role in the upcoming season, he could be even more productive.
The Saints, looking to add more weapons, still have Alvin Kamara, tight ends Juwan Johnson and Taysom Hill, and have signed Cedric Wilson and Equanimeous St. Brown as additional wide receiver options. They also drafted Bub Means in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft and may target veteran free agents as training camp approaches.
**Increased Role for Shaheed with the Saints**
In his third season, Shaheed is expected to be the starting slot receiver, with Olave as the primary outside receiver and A.T. Perry on the other side. Shaheed, at 6’0″ and 180 pounds, has been used as a ball carrier on jet sweeps and as a deep slot weapon. With new kick-off rules, he will likely continue as the featured returner, benefiting from the additional regulations.
As long as Shaheed retains his special teams role, his offensive impact should remain significant even with limited opportunities. Increased starting reps are anticipated, but he will need to perform well against tighter coverages now that defenses are aware of his deep speed.
