Josh Green’s exit from the Mavericks opens the door for a new guard to step up. The Dallas Mavericks are in the midst of a significant offseason, having bolstered their roster that reached the NBA Finals last season. However, free agency activity has slowed recently, shifting focus to the Summer League.
In their first Summer League game on Friday, Dallas defeated the Boston Celtics, with Olivier-Maxence Prosper scoring 22 points. Prosper had struggled early in the Summer League but showed promising potential in this game.
While Mavericks fans have enjoyed an exciting offseason, highlighted by acquiring Klay Thompson in a six-team sign-and-trade, the departure of Josh Green was a notable downside. Green was traded to the Charlotte Hornets, who had been interested in him since the trade deadline.
Despite the loss of Green, this move created an ideal opportunity for Quentin Grimes, who was acquired from the Detroit Pistons last month in exchange for Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks. Grimes, who averaged 7.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game last season while shooting 37.2 percent from the field, has the potential to seamlessly fill Green’s role.
Grimes could prove to be a better shooter than Green, often taking tougher shots and shooting off the dribble. Playing alongside Luka Doncic, Grimes is expected to get excellent shooting opportunities. Additionally, Grimes can attack closeouts, finish at the rim, or pass to a big man, and he is focused on improving his playmaking skills.
Defensively, Grimes is known for his tenacity and effectiveness, fitting well into Jason Kidd’s system. He takes pride in guarding the toughest opponents and could emerge as the Mavericks’ best guard defender, replacing Derrick Jones Jr.’s defensive role.
