The Yankees from New York are 60-42. In the American League East, they are only 1.5 games behind the Baltimore Orioles. The team has been somewhat put on course by a stretch of ten to twenty, but they still have time to recruit more players before the deadline. According to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, they plan to sell Nestor Cortes in an effort to acquire a left fielder or starting infielder by the July 30 deadline.
“The Yankees dealt center fielder Harrison Bader to the Cardinals in exchange for Jordan Montgomery in 2022, making a similar move,” Kirschner noted. It was anticipated that Montgomery would not be included in the Yankees’ postseason rotation, and general manager Brian Cashman wished to strengthen a vital defensive position. Cortes is still valuable and has an additional year of team control. Cortes might be traded for a left fielder or new starting infielder.
Yankees’ Season under Cortes
Cortes believes that the Yankees can accomplish their goals regardless of the criticism they have gotten throughout their bad run of play. On July 16, Cortes came to X to discuss his enthusiasm for being a Yankee and his thoughts on the criticism the team faces.
“Everyone wants to be us, yet they talk down on the Yankees. Pinstripes are a luxury to wear. We are in contention each year. I’m fortunate to be able to fight for a postseason berth and to always be a contender at the very end,” Cortes posted on X.
It goes without saying that Cortes is not in favor of being dealt at the deadline. Cortes might not be a key player in the playoff rotation, but the Yankees are still a strong contender. Cortes started for the Yankees on opening day. Luis Gil, Marcus Stroman, and Gerrit Cole will lead the Yankees’ rotation in the postseason.
Cortes has made 21 starts this season and has a 3.99 ERA. In his last two outings, he has given up 11 earned runs in 8 2/3 innings. Cortes has a 4.97 ERA in 2023 despite only making 12 starts.
Yankees’ Trade Requirements
It’s obvious the Yankees need a hitter. In July, the Yankees offense has the 18th-highest run total. In April, May, and June, they were in the top ten rankings. After protracted struggles, Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu may both be replaced by the deadline.
After 40 games this season, LeMahieu’s batting average stands at.181. This season, Torres is hitting.229. Still, in his previous ten games, he is hitting.303.
Prior to the July 30 trade deadline, Cashman told reporters on July 9 that the team will “be open-minded to a lot of different things.”
“We’ll try our best to improve in the areas where we can,” Cashman stated.
The Yankees were 61-23 at the beginning of 2022 before finishing below.500. In the end, the Houston Astros, who went on to win the World Series, swept them. If the Yankees don’t make a change, this season might end up the same.
