**Miami Heat Summer League Star Deserves Two-Way Contract**
The Miami Heat should immediately offer Josh Christopher, a former first-round pick, a two-way contract following his standout performance in the Summer League.
The Heat secured their first Summer League championship in franchise history on Monday night, defeating the Memphis Grizzlies 120-118 in an overtime thriller. The team featured players like Kel’el Ware, Pelle Larsson, Alondes Williams, Keshad Johnson, and Cole Swider. However, it was Josh Christopher who stole the spotlight, earning the Summer League championship MVP.
Selected 24th overall in the 2021 draft, Christopher delivered clutch performances throughout the Summer League. He had a 20-point fourth-quarter outburst against the Oklahoma City Thunder, a crucial and-1 play against the Golden State Warriors to propel the Heat to the championship game, and a 24-point game (including six three-pointers) in the final, highlighted by a step-back three-pointer from the logo.
Christopher has been part of the Miami Heat pipeline since joining their G League affiliate in Sioux Falls in early January. After being waived by the Houston Rockets in 2023, he has worked hard to prove himself, embodying the Heat’s values of humility and diligence.
With 14 players on their roster, the Heat cannot add a 15th player without exceeding the second tax apron until midseason. However, they have flexibility with their two-way contract spots, which can be adjusted at any time without affecting the team’s payroll. Teams can carry up to three two-way players, and Christopher should be a clear choice for one of these spots.
Despite Dru Smith currently holding one of the two-way spots, the Heat should consider replacing him with Christopher. Smith is recovering from an ACL tear and missed the Summer League, while Christopher, at just 22 years old, has shown significant potential and raw talent.
For a team facing salary cap constraints, depth is crucial. Offering Christopher a two-way contract and potentially upgrading him to a standard contract later would be a significant win for the Heat. His scoring ability could provide a much-needed boost to the team’s offense. Bringing Christopher into the locker room is a smart move, as it is rare to find a talented player with a newfound drive to succeed.
