Mets Sign Former Gold Glove Winner to Minor League Deal
At the 100-game mark, the New York Mets are 52-48 and holding the final wild-card spot. Given this unexpected success, president of baseball operations David Stearns has been actively improving the roster, which seemed unpromising in May.
Stearns has already enhanced the bullpen by acquiring Matt Gage and Phil Maton, claiming Alex Young off waivers, and strengthening the catching position by signing Logan Porter.
Recently, the Mets bolstered their outfield depth by signing former Gold Glove winner Jackie Bradley Jr. to a minor league contract.
According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Jackie Bradley Jr. has been assigned to Triple-A Syracuse. Bradley had been playing for the Independent Long Island Ducks, where he excelled with a .400/.476/.727 slash line, 12 home runs, and 35 RBIs in 40 games.
The 34-year-old has a career .225/.303/.381 slash line with 109 home runs and 449 RBIs over 11 MLB seasons. Known for his stellar defense, Bradley won a Gold Glove in 2018 and has played all three outfield positions. He was an All-Star in 2016 and won the World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2018, earning the ALCS MVP that year.
For the Mets, Bradley Jr.’s signing adds necessary depth to Triple-A Syracuse’s outfield, which has been thin since Trayce Thompson’s departure and Ben Gamel’s promotion. If Bradley continues his impressive hitting, a major league call-up could be in his future.
