Good News: Atlanta Braves Sign Another Highly Rated Player

A week after the 2024 MLB draft concluded, the Atlanta Braves signed all 20 of their draft picks, demonstrating their propensity for moving quickly to lock up draft pick deals. It was unclear at times during the process if they would be able to sign every player, particularly Eric Hartman, the 20th round pick, but we had a pretty decent notion that they would succeed when it was revealed that he would sign on Monday. The Braves were only $150 away from the 5% overage that would have resulted in the loss of a future draft pick with this deal.
Cam Caminiti, a 17-year-old left-handed pitcher who many believed would be selected in the top 15 of the draft, is the class’s main signee. Rather, Caminiti, who appears thrilled to be joining a team that has a reputation for rapidly developing pitchers, fell to the 24th choice in what many consider to be the first-round steal. Although Caminiti was supposed to be a costly addition, which he was, it became abundantly evident that the Braves would be able to cause serious damage with this class of signings when they were able to secure a slot value agreement for him.

The Battery Power midseason top 30 prospects list includes two additional draftees: Carter Holton, a second-round selection, and Luke Sinnard, a third-round selection. Although both players have injury concerns that knocked them down in the draft, they both stand out for their collegiate accomplishments and their good pitch statistics that appeared on the Braves models.
The most notable over-slot transaction from the draft was for Nick Montgomery, a fifth-round pick who narrowly missed our top 30 prospects but is someone we plan to watch going ahead. Drake Baldwin, Shea Langeliers, and William Contreras are the three catchers in the organization’s recent crop of catchers rated in the top 100 that Montgomery, a catcher with significant raw power, is joining. After Caminiti and Holton, Montgomery’s $1,000,000 signing bonus was the third-largest in the class. Other noteworthy over-slot signings were also made. Ethan Bagwell, a pitcher selected in the sixth round, is an athletic pitcher with a mid-rotation ceiling but still needs a lot of improvement. Cayman Goode, a right-hander selected in the 12th round who attended a prep school in Virginia, is athletic and can spin a breaking ball, but he still has to work on his other skills. Then there is Eric Hartman, a Canadian athletic outfielder selected in the 20th round who Matt Powers mentions in his draft recap as having a strong makeup.
