Every Summer League season, an undrafted player usually makes a name for himself. These players show their worth versus NBA competition in front of front offices and coaching staffs searching for a competitive edge, even though they didn’t get much attention on selection night. The San Antonio Spurs could be able to acquire one of those undrafted gems this season. The Spurs signed Riley Minix, an undrafted forward from Morehead State, to a training camp contract on Saturday.
Among the NBA Draft’s strongest narratives was Minix’s. In his lone Division One season at Morehead State, the former NAIA star was a formidable force. During his final season, he averaged 20.9 points and 9.17 rebounds. In a first-round NCAA Tournament loss to Illinois, he scored 27 points and made five three-pointers. It was a fantastic performance. His offensive skill set is distinctive as he can score from both the low block and the wing.
Minix scored ten points or more in two of the Summer Spurs’ games: 16 against the Pelicans and 14 against the Raptors. His ability to spread the floor was crucial for San Antonio and might one day secure him a spot on an NBA roster. Throughout the Las Vegas Summer League, Minix’s strength and scoring prowess were acknowledged by Summer League coach Kenny Trevino.
Minix will have an opportunity to earn a position on the two-way roster going into training camp. At the moment, Jamaree Bouyea is the only player for the Spurs who plays both ways. Harrison Ingram, a second-round selection, will probably take the second place. Along with any outside player the Spurs choose to sign, Minix is a strong contender for the final two-way deal. Dominick Barlow is still unsigned, so don’t write him off.
When training camp begins in September, the Spurs will have an opportunity to see how Minix and the others compare.
