Braves’ Ozzie Albies Out for Eight Weeks with Broken Wrist
Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies is expected to be sidelined for about eight weeks due to a broken left wrist. Albies injured his wrist during the ninth inning of Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals while attempting to catch a throw as Michael Siani stole second base. Siani’s slide caused Albies’ glove hand to bend awkwardly, resulting in immediate pain.
Albies remained crouched on the field, clutching his wrist, and was replaced by Zack Short for the remainder of the game. After the Braves’ 6-2 loss, X-rays confirmed a fracture in Albies’ left wrist.
A three-time All-Star, Albies has been batting .255 with eight home runs and 46 RBIs, usually hitting second in the lineup. This injury is another setback for the Braves, who lost reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. to a season-ending knee injury in May.
Additionally, the Braves placed All-Star pitcher Max Fried on the 15-day injured list due to forearm neuritis, retroactive to Thursday. Currently, the Braves are 8 1/2 games behind first-place Philadelphia but hold the top wild card spot in the NL as they aim for their seventh consecutive NL East title.
