Latest News: The Canucks have signed Another Top Experienced Player to a one year-deal

What should you know about the Canucks’ newest signing, Layton Ahac, who they signed to a one-year AHL contract in Abbotsford?
Layron Ahac has signed a one-year contract with the Abbotsford Canucks for the 2024–25 AHL season, as the team announced on their official website. Here are five things about the newest member of the organization that you should be aware of:

1) Ahac was born in North Vancouver on February 22, 2001, however his birthplace is originally British Columbia. He is a left-handed defenseman that weighs 205 pounds and is 6 feet 2 in height.

2) Before joining the West Van Academy Elite 15s in 2016–17 to compete in the CSSHL U16 league, Ahac was a member of the North Shore WC U15 A1 youth squad. In 31 games (including playoffs), he recorded 22 points and 26 penalty minutes. He also made two appearances with the Vancouver NW Giants U18 AAA in the BCEHL U18 league during that season.

3) Following that, the 23-year-old had two fantastic seasons with the Prince George Spruce Kings in the BCHL, scoring 61 points in 110 regular season games (along with 58 penalty minutes). In the 2018–19 season, he scored 17 points in 17 postseason games and was named to the BCHL Second All-Star Team, which contributed to their first BCHL championship.
4) Ahac was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the third round (86th overall) of the 2018 NHL entry draft after being ranked 62nd among all skaters in North America by NHL Central Scouting. After committing to Ohio State University in 2017, he played two seasons in the NCAA, finishing with 12 points, 46 penalty minutes, and a +3 rating in 63 games played overall.

5) In all honesty, Ahac has never performed to the level of his potential as a dominant two-way blueliner, even in his AHL tenure with the Henderson Silver Knights. He has participated in 151 games (including three postseason contests), scoring 18 points, racking up 61 penalty minutes, and earning a -26 rating.
Ultimately, even though Ahac is obviously someone the Canucks see potential in, he merely adds to the roster’s current glut of six left-handed defensive players. If given the chance, he can make a substantial contribution to the penalty kill unit in addition to adding more physicality to the squad.
