Jeff Jackson, hired last summer to oversee hockey operations for the Edmonton Oilers, is now searching for a new general manager following the departure of Ken Holland. Jackson praised Holland’s tenure, highlighting key moves like signing Zach Hyman and trading for Mattias Ekholm in 2023.
Jackson and Holland had a positive working relationship and mutually agreed on the decision for Holland to step down. Holland, 68, was not forced out but had been discussing his future with Jackson throughout the season. They decided it was best for him to move on after five years with the team.
Holland wasn’t offered a contract extension after the Oilers lost in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, but Jackson emphasized that they were in sync throughout the season. Holland may take on a senior advisor role elsewhere or return to Detroit in some capacity.
Jackson applauded Holland’s significant contributions, particularly the signing of free agent Zach Hyman and the trade for Mattias Ekholm, both of which bolstered the team’s performance. Hyman’s leadership and goal-scoring prowess, along with Ekholm’s defensive skills and mentorship, were pivotal for the Oilers.
The search for a new GM will focus on finding a younger candidate, with potential names including Mathieu Darche, Ryan Hardy, Jason Botterill, Shawn Horcoff, Sean Burke, Mark Hunter, and current Oilers assistant manager Keith Gretzky. Jackson expects the process to take time as teams release personnel.
While Jackson will act as the interim GM during the draft and free-agency period, he stressed that he does not want the GM job permanently. He will navigate contract negotiations, including deciding whether to buy out goalie Jack Campbell to free up cap space.
Jackson also addressed Leon Draisaitl’s contract situation, emphasizing the importance of securing an extension but not feeling pressured to do so immediately. He acknowledged the interconnected decisions involving Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, who has two years left on his contract.
Regarding potential moves, Jackson indicated a focus on maintaining the current roster with minor adjustments. He acknowledged the challenge of re-signing all unrestricted free agents (UFAs) due to cap constraints but expressed a desire to keep key players, including Adam Henrique and Vinny Desharnais.
Lastly, Jackson mentioned the possibility of Connor McDavid requiring surgery for a suspected oblique muscle issue, with further medical evaluations pending.
